Why should I choose a dental implant?

Perhaps you shouldn’t choose a dental implant because it is not the best form of treatment for your dental needs.

The truth is you will only know if a dental implant is the best option for you after you have had a consultation with a dental implant surgeon.  Your chosen dental implant surgeon should canvas all of the treatment options with you prior to recommending dental implant surgery.

Perhaps the question should be rephrased to read – “Why do many people choose a dental implant?”

There are a lot of reasons but the most common reasons for choosing a dental implant are generally:
  1. Dental implants provide a result which is the closest match to natural teeth.  This applies to both cosmetic and functional outcomes.  The implant forms a solid attachment to the jaw because it is made of titanium which is accepted by the body and acts just like a natural root.  Once the crown is fitted the tooth feels natural and allows you to eat, speak and smile with full confidence.  Better still it will never slip like a denture and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

  2. Longevity - the implant fuses to and effectively becomes part of your jawbone  Proper dental hygiene will generally see a lifelong result and unlike dentures dental implants shouldn’t need to be remade or replaced.  Most importantly jaw alignment and bone density will be maintained.

  3. Dental implants only have a positive impact on adjacent teeth.  Dental implants have no effect on the health of adjacent natural teeth. Other tooth-replacement systems, however, can weaken adjacent teeth. With bridgework, for example, the natural teeth on either side of a gap left by a missing tooth must provide support for the dental bridge. This can stress those adjacent teeth and leave them more susceptible to decay. Likewise, a partial denture relies on adjacent natural teeth for support and may cause those teeth to loosen or decay over time. Dental implants are stand-alone tooth replacements that don't rely on support from adjacent natural teeth.  Importantly, also, dental implants maintain jaw alignment and bone density which impacts positively on overall oral health.

  4. No changes to a good oral care regime.  Caring for implant teeth is no different than caring for your natural teeth. You must brush them and floss them daily. But you won’t need special creams and adhesives, or to soak them in a glass overnight, as you would with dentures.  While implants can never decay, they can be compromised by gum disease. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist for professional cleanings and examination is the best way to prevent gum disease, and to ensure your dental implants last a lifetime, as they're designed to do.
